Volunteer Profile – Marc Finnigan
How many camps have you attended?
Why do you volunteer for Feel the Magic®?
I volunteer because it is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been part of. From day one when I met so many amazing people I knew I had found something special. I feel like I’m part of something – a family. A safe, welcoming place where I can share my feelings, my fears and no-one will judge me. It’s an emotional roller coaster but it’s something I love and there is never a shortage of people to help me out along the way.
What is your favourite season and why?
Tough one! I’m going to say Summer. Purely because by Summer everyone has poured their hearts out, we’ve been on an emotional journey together and the bonds we’ve made as a group are amazing. It’s also a little sad (in a good way) for me personally for the very same reason. Even though some may not be at their summer in their journey, I think it gives them a little insight into what it can be like and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard about grief?
I’ve learnt so much about grief and how to try and deal with it from my time at Camps. The thing that sticks the most is that there are no rules when it comes to dealing with grief. Everyone’s journey is unique. But if you talk to people – friends, family and loved ones, and you’re open and honest about your feelings, it does make it easier.
What inspires you about our campers?
Wow! What doesn’t! These kids blow my mind each and every Camp. The way they come to Camp with such positive attitudes after going through things that most adults would struggle to deal with is inspiring and really puts things into perspective. I have seen kids young and old connect with fellow Campers and mentors and show empathy and compassion that has literally brought me to tears. They are wise beyond their years and are far more resilient and emotionally in touch than us adults give them credit for.
A final note from Marc:
Since becoming a mentor at Feel the Magic I can honestly say it has made me a better person. I have got so much out of my experiences at Camp, Not only do I feel enriched and excited to be part of something so amazing, I feel as though I am better equipped and more able to deal with things I have going on in my life. I have made new friends, I have become part of a group of people who are some of the most amazing human beings on the planet. It is one of the most rewarding things I have done.
