Volunteer Profile – Bryttani Ajani
How many camps have you attended?
Why do you volunteer for Feel the Magic®?
I love how Camp Magic provides young people going through grief with a safe place to connect with others in a similar situation. I know, as a young person who experienced loss, it is easy to feel alone and like no-one understands. Watching the young people at Camp Magic meet others in the same position is absolutely inspiring.
What is your favourite season and why?
Summer – you realise life is still meant for LIVING and you’re allowed to have fun, set goals and make plans for the future. I like to think losing a loved one teaches us how to live with gratitude daily and in my Summer, I made the decision to live the best, most positive life possible, because my brother only got six years of life and there was no chance I was taking the rest of mine for granted.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard about grief?
No-one told me this, but after observing others, I decided that there was no right or wrong way to grieve and the emotions can hit you unexpectedly, even ten years after the loss. It’s a life-long challenge and there should be no pressure to just suddenly ‘be over it’.
What inspires you about our campers?
Their openness and willingness to share their personal stories. It’s always so moving and inspiring!
A final note from Bryttani:
The gift of Camp Magic is priceless! Inquire about donating or volunteering to ensure no grieving child misses this gift of love and connection.
