Volunteer Profile – Bede Curran

How many camps have you attended?

Why do you volunteer for Feel the Magic®?

For those that do know me, I would be able to answer this one through a great interpretive dance!  But, really the reason that I continue to volunteer for this amazing organisation is because of the underlying purpose of Feel the Magic. To be able to give back and make a difference in the lives of grieving children is an amazing experience and opportunity.

What is your favourite season and why?

My favourite season would have to be Summer! There’s something that is rather wonderful on the last day that is hard to put into words. Seeing the final celebration from all the Campers on what they have learnt over the three days is a moment that never gets old and to be able to share that with the families of the Campers is touching moment.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard about grief?

That grief is unavoidable. We all at some point in life will go through a loss. This means no-one is ever alone.

What inspires you about our campers?

Their bravery, for these Campers to come to a Camp, where they don’t know anyone and talk about something so personal is just amazing. They remind us as adults to be brave. Like a Camper once told me “bravery is ageless”.  Also, seeing the Campers live out the values of Feel the Magic is always incredible to watch and be a part of.

A final note from Bede:

I’ve been able to attend Camps as both a mentor, and as a talk time leader, and all I can say is WOW!  What James and Kristy have created is beyond words. For grieving children to have a space where they are able to be supported and educated is amazing, and I hope that if you are reading this and wondering if you should volunteer, this gives you the answer… I say YES!
